Job Description

The Fine Wine Auctioneer is responsible for leading live, online, and hybrid wine auctions while delivering an engaging and professional client experience. Acting as the public face of the auction, the Auctioneer combines strong presentation skills, fine wine knowledge, and commercial awareness to maximize auction performance and bidder participation.

This position requires confidence, credibility, and the ability to engage collectors, investors, and wine enthusiasts in a luxury environment.

Auction Management

  • Conduct fine wine auctions with professionalism, energy, and authority.
  • Present lots accurately, highlighting provenance, rarity, condition, market value, and critic ratings.
  • Facilitate competitive bidding while maintaining transparency and fairness.
  • Monitor auction flow and adjust pacing to optimize bidder engagement and sales performance.



Auction Preparation

  • Review auction lots, catalog details, provenance documentation, and condition reports.
  • Collaborate with wine specialists and operations teams to ensure accurate lot descriptions.
  • Participate in auction rehearsals, briefings, and pre-sale reviews.
  • Verify high-value consignments and ensure compliance with authentication standards.



Client & Bidder Engagement

  • Build relationships with collectors, consignors, private clients, and trade buyers.
  • Provide professional guidance and support before, during, and after auctions.
  • Assist in promoting key auction lots and attracting bidder participation.
  • Represent the company at wine tastings, collector events, and industry functions.



Market Intelligence

  • Stay informed on global wine market trends, auction results, and collector demand.
  • Provide insights on pricing, bidding behavior, emerging regions, and investment opportunities.
  • Support business development initiatives through market knowledge and client feedback.



Compliance & Administration

  • Ensure all auction activities comply with company policies and relevant regulations.
  • Confirm bids, hammer prices, and auction records accurately.
  • Support post-auction settlement, invoicing, and reporting activities.
  • Prepare auction performance summaries and recommendations for improvement.



The Successful Applicant

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Hospitality, Wine Studies, Marketing, Luxury Goods Management, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in auctioneering, wine sales, fine wine trading, luxury goods, hospitality, or a related client-facing industry.
  • Strong knowledge of fine wines, including major wine regions, producers, vintages, provenance, storage conditions, and market trends.
  • Proven ability to present confidently to high-net-worth individuals, collectors, investors, and trade buyers.
  • Excellent public speaking, communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong commercial awareness with the ability to drive bidder engagement and maximize auction performance.
  • Experience managing client relationships in a luxury, hospitality, auction, or fine wine environment.
  • High level of professionalism, credibility, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and auction management systems.
  • Strong relationship builder with excellent client service orientation.



Language Requirements

  • Native-level English proficiency with exceptional verbal presentation and communication skills.
  • Fluent spoken and written Cantonese.
  • Fluent spoken and written Mandarin (Putonghua).
  • Ability to conduct professional presentations, client meetings, and auction events in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin.



Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional wine certifications such as WSET Level 3, WSET Diploma, Court of Master Sommeliers, or equivalent.
  • Previous auctioneering experience within fine wine, spirits, luxury collectibles, art, watches, or similar premium sectors.
  • Established network within the wine collector, investment, hospitality, or luxury goods community.
  • Knowledge of Asian and international fine wine markets.
  • Experience hosting live, online, and hybrid auction events.
