1. Chief Financial Officer (CFO)/ Finance Director
Executive level talent is always highly sought-after, especially in the banking and financial services sector. There has been a shift away from traditional financial model towards a more proactive, agile one, giving the CFO of today a more pronounced, strategic profile with deeper integration in planning, strategy and performance management. As such, CFOs and Directors can expect to earn about HKD1,350,000 to HKD3,150,000 a year, depending on which financial sector they specialise in.
2. Legal Associate – Private Practice (US Law Firms)
Lawyers in the private practice and who are based in a US law firm or international firms which practice US law earn up to HKD2,463,000 on average as their salaries are based on New York rates. Consequently, lawyers in a US law firm can see an approximate 5% jump in their annual wage with every additional year of experience.
3. Project Director (Property and Construction)
Project directors with over 10 years of experience can expect to garner a salary between HKD1,000,000 - if they are working with a retail/ F&B operator or up to HKD2,370,000 - if they work on the client side or with a developer. The salary disparity is mainly due to the nature and scope of the projects that they are exposed to. For example, project directors working with a client/ developer usually need to possess in-depth knowledge and experience across all facets of real estate.
4. Chief Information Officer (CIO)
The salaries of CIOs is largely dependent on the sector the organisation is based in, but CIOs can expect to earn between HKD1,850,000 – HKD 2,050,000 per year. CIOs in the banking and financial services sector can expect salaries in the higher bracket – especially with growing investment in Hong Kong financial technology (fintech) firms from government and investors.
5. Managing Director/ General Manager (IT and telecommunications)
Professionals in the IT and telecommunications sales field need to have a unique combination of sales experience, commercial awareness, and technical expertise. Therefore, managing directors and general managers in the IT and telecommunications sector and who have over 10 years of experience earn about HKD2,000,000 on average.
6. APAC Head of Human Resources (Commerce)
The head of HR is not only responsible for the smooth and profitable operation of a company’s HR department, but he or she also needs to provide consultation to management on strategic staffing plans, compensation, benefits, training and development, succession planning and more. Therefore, the head of HR can command a salary of HKD1,950,000 on average across most of the sectors.
7. General Manager (Consumer products and FMCG)
Playing a key leadership role within the organisation, GMs in the consumer products and FMCG sector are usually involved in managing the supply chain and distribution across the country as well as developing new sales leads and business opportunities. Therefore, they are required to think strategically, financially and operationally. GMs in this sector earn HKD1,950,000 on average as compared to GMs in the manufacturing/ industrial sector (HKD1,250,000) and media/ entertainment sector (HKD1,075,000).
8. Global Head (Procurement and supply chain)
The global head of procurement oversees the procurement and sourcing strategies of the company, on top of discovering profitable suppliers and negotiating external vendors, and those with over 10 years of experience earn approximately HKD1,750,000 on average.
9. Retail Operations General Manager (Retail and F&B)
Described as a ‘Shopper’s Paradise’, Hong Kong has been famed for its shopping malls and luxury retails brands. With retail sales set to rebound in 2018, it comes as no surprise that the role of retail operations general manager is one of the top 10 highest-paying jobs in Hong Kong. Whilst starting salaries of sales associates average at HKD125,000 per year, GMs with over 10 years of experience can earn up to HKD1,600,000 on average.
10. Head of Digital/ e-Commerce (In-house)
With the rise of new technologies and innovative ways to engage with audiences, professionals with a strong expertise in digital and e-Commerce are in demand. For example, an in-house head of digital can command a salary of up to HKD1,500,000 a year whilst an e-Commerce head can expect to earn approximately HKD1,350,000 per year.
