The job title Chief Information Officer first emerged in the 1980s as a largely technical role but with the growth in importance of data it has become a crucial element in the management of a modern large enterprise, usually the most senior executive working within IT often reporting directly to the CEO. As the importance of technology has grown so has the position of CIO.
As a CIO you will be responsible for managing and implementing information and computer technologies and analysing how they increase value for the company. This means both improving existing processes and integrating new systems. The role has evolved over the years becoming more and more strategic as companies try to keep ahead of the rapid changes in computer technology.
In larger organisations you will often be working with the Chief Technical Officer who will be responsible for the day to day running of the IT systems.
